Developer interactions and conversations have changed. They have shifted away from owned web properties and in-person events toward just-in-time learning via generative AI and engagement with online communities via social channels. Community managers will build an engagement strategy that works with this new context to support awareness and adoption of 1Password's developer tools, through technical depth, authenticity, and by advocating for users and their needs wherever they are.
Community managers are individual contributors who will report to the Director of Developer Relations. They will work alongside the existing customer success, engineering, and social teams to shape 1Password's public community interactions for a new era of developer engagement. They will foster and participate in security, AI, and 1Password communities, listen and respond to ongoing conversations across social platforms, and help keep 1Password’s public repositories healthy. They will cultivate close relationships with 1Password developer tools users and support them in talking about 1Password in public at events and online.
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
Technical Familiarity: 5+ years in technical roles including software or platform engineering, community management, support, solution engineering, or other fields. You are familiar with modern development workflows and patterns, and can engage knowledgeably about them.
Community Leadership: Experience engaging in sensitive and complex community situations, in public online and in person, with humility, empathy, judgment, tact, and humor.
Communication: A clear written and verbal communication style. You are good at listening and talking. You communicate clearly and kindly on social media, and skillfully on GitHub and in project trackers
Organizing: You have proven experience organizing in person and online events, asynchronous projects, or long-running cross-functional efforts. You proactively identify and address dependencies and think about point in time events from an attendee perspective.
Advocating: You have experience listening for insights, requests, and opportunities in technical conversations, compiling those insights into actionable feedback, and advocating for it to be implemented within your organization.
What you can expect:
Engage: Generate awareness of 1Password’s developer tools by engaging in great technical conversations about identity and security in public online and in real life, including on LinkedIn, X, Reddit, and other public channels. Enable other 1Password employees to engage online too.
Build: Create welcoming, engaging, and productive places for our developer community to gather, talk, and connect with us and each other, including in our community Slack, on GitHub, and on social media.
Advocate: Synthesize feedback and conversations with community members and partners into actionable insights for 1Password, and surface them to product teams.
Enable: Nucleate communities at scale by building tools and training to help other 1Password employees engage effectively with the community. These could be speaking training, talk templates, community engagement guidelines, user group guidelines, or other tools.
Celebrate: Build programs to celebrate community members who engage most deeply with us technically and out in the world. Create developer programs that incentivise peer help, code contribution, public content, online discussion, and other user-generated engagement.
Reinforce: Maximize the impact of targeted, high-investment activities by re-using assets as broadly as possible. Find natural ways to cite documentation or highlight tutorials online. Reuse conference talk recordings for evergreen social and other applications.
USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $133,000 USD and $186,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
