The Position
As a Payroll Compliance Expert, you are the trusted regulatory advisor for your country or region, helping Remote design, build, and operate compliant payroll products at scale.
You will serve as the subject matter expert for payroll legislation, tax, social security, labour, and employment requirements within your assigned jurisdictions. Your expertise will influence product design, operational processes, customer solutions, market expansion, and compliance strategy across the business.
As part of Remote's Payroll Compliance & Advisory Centre of Excellence, you will work across Product, Engineering, Operations, Customer Experience, Legal, and Risk teams to ensure compliance is embedded into everything we build and deliver.
Success in this role requires a unique combination of regulatory expertise, systems thinking, stakeholder management, and commercial awareness. You will not simply interpret legislation—you will help translate complex regulatory requirements into scalable products, processes, controls, and customer experiences.
General Requirements
Serve as the Compliance Authority for Your Region
- Act as the primary payroll compliance expert for your assigned countries or region.
- Interpret payroll, tax, social security, labour, and employment legislation.
- Monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on products, processes, and customers.
- Provide clear, practical, and commercially balanced compliance guidance.
Partner with Product Teams to Build Compliant Solutions
- Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to ensure compliance is embedded into product development.
- Translate legislative requirements into clear business and product requirements.
- Review product designs and proposed solutions to identify compliance risks and opportunities.
- Validate system logic, calculations, workflows, and outputs against regulatory requirements.
- Support product launches and go-live activities.
Provide Strategic Compliance Advisory
- Advise stakeholders on complex compliance questions and emerging regulatory developments.
- Support customer-facing teams with high-risk or complex compliance matters.
- Provide guidance for market expansion initiatives and new product offerings.
- Act as a trusted advisor across Product, Operations, Customer Experience, and Leadership teams.
Support Compliance Assurance Activities
- Conduct compliance assessments and reviews to validate regulatory adherence.
- Lead or support regulatory audits and investigations within your area of expertise.
- Identify compliance gaps and recommend practical remediation strategies.
- Support the development of scalable compliance assurance frameworks.
Drive Regulatory Intelligence & Change Management
- Monitor legislative developments and emerging regulatory trends.
- Assess business impact and communicate changes effectively across the organisation.
- Partner with Product and Operations teams to ensure regulatory changes are implemented successfully.
- Support long-term compliance planning and strategic decision-making.
Build Scalable Compliance Frameworks
- Create and maintain compliance documentation, rules libraries, and knowledge assets.
- Design repeatable processes that reduce manual interpretation and improve consistency.
- Support the development of compliance controls and governance frameworks.
- Contribute to automation and compliance-by-design initiatives.
Enable and Develop Others
- Deliver training and enablement programs to increase compliance capability across Remote.
- Mentor Payroll Specialists, Product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Create clear documentation and guidance materials that simplify complex legislation.
- Promote a culture of compliance awareness and continuous learning.

Regulatory Expertise
- Deep expertise in payroll, tax, social security, labour, and employment compliance within your country or region.
- Strong understanding of how legislation translates into payroll calculations, processes, and product requirements.
Product & Systems Thinking
- Experience working with technology, product, or operational teams to implement regulatory requirements.
- Ability to translate complex legislation into scalable business processes and system logic.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Advisory & Stakeholder Management
- Skilled at building relationships and influencing stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Operations, Legal, Customer Experience, and Leadership teams.
- Able to balance compliance requirements with operational and commercial realities.
- Confident communicator capable of simplifying complex regulatory concepts.
Compliance Assurance
- Experience conducting audits, reviews, investigations, or compliance assessments.
- Ability to identify root causes and recommend pragmatic corrective actions.
- Strong judgement when managing risk and ambiguity.
